Ssese is a group of islands found in the western part of the large Lake Victoria, within Kalangala district. It has 84 tinny islands which vary in size from the less than 10,000 sq km to more 40 kilometers in length. Bugala is actually the largest island. The Sesse islands came to place about 12,000 years back when a tectonic change caused a raised basin found between the 2 arms of the East African Great Rift Valley to actually flood, hence resulting into the formation of Lake Victoria.

Safari Activities

Guided Walks
They can arrange for you Guided walks around the Islands to observe the farm of palm trees plus fishing villages. The guests may as well visit the stunning bats caves. When at Bugala Island, there are guided walks within the forests which enable the guests to see a number of monkey species.

Approximately 43 of these islands are populated by Bantu speaking – basesse tribe which is related to the Baganda plus Basoga people of Uganda. The major economic activity here is fishing of the large Nile Perch with most of this being exported overseas. The moorland are habitat to a diversity of primates and there is a ferry that connects the mainland at Bukakata to Bugala Island.

Boat trip
Boat trips may be organized as a connection to the other Islands hence offering guests an opportunity to appreciate the great beauty of other Islands and even watch the spectacular birds.

Day 1: Trip to Ssese Island
Day 2: Bike Riding, Birding, Fishing and Nature Walks on the Island
Day 3: Return to Kampala

TRIP ITINERARY

Day 1: Trip to Ssese Island
After breakfast you will drive to Masaka where you will have lunch. Proceed to Bukakata Landing site on the shores of Lake Victoria and there your guide will brief you about this tour. You will Board the ferry to Luuku site on the side of Ssese islands, and then proceed to Lutoboka bay. Dinner and sleep at Palm Beach resort.

Day 2: Bike Riding, Birding, Nature Walks and Fishing, on the Island
Following breakfast you will go for a forest walk for the entire day exploring the island. Look forward to seeing several primates, birds and butterflies, plus other species. You will go for lunch at the lodge in the afternoon go unwind besides the lake shores, or construct sand castles or even ride bikes or go fish depending on your preference. Have dinner and spend the night at Palm Beach Resort.

Day 3: Return to Kampala
After your breakfast you will go to Luuku landing site where you will board a ferry to Bukakata landing site on the mainland Lake Victoria. From there you will return to Kampala.

Tour overview

This trip begins in Queen Elizabeth National Park home of the renowned tree climbing lions and several antelope species, buffaloes, hyenas, baboons, Topis, waterbucks, crocodiles, elephants, hippos among others. It proceeds to Kibale National Park home to the largest number and variety of primates in the whole of East Africa including Grey cheeked Mangabeys, Phoestes, and Blue, Red-tailed, chimpanzees and Red-Colobus. Have a nature walk within Bigodi Swamp to enjoy a wonderful opportunity for watching birds such as the sunbirds and the great blue turraco.

Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Launch Cruise
Following an early breakfast transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park driving past the beautiful legendary Rwenzori Mountain range on this journey. In the afternoon you will go for the special two hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel which connects lakes George and Edward. You will sail through perhaps the highest concentration of giant Hippos plus several other animals observed drinking at the water shores. This launch cruise provides a unique platform for taking photographs, watching birds and viewing game, perfect for a Uganda safari. The productive bird life is colorful and astonishing with well over 550 resident species.

Day 2: Game Drive along the way to Kibale Chimp Forest National Park
You will have a game drive very early in the morning in the park during which you will see Lions, Elephants, Topis, Leopards, Bush bucks, Cape Buffaloes, Defassa Waterbucks, Giant Forest Hogs, Uganda Kobs, among others. On the Drive to Kibale National Park you will be able to enjoy an impressive sight of the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” which you will clearly see on the road to Fort Portal.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking, Bigodi Swamp for bird watching
Right After Breakfast, you will head out into the Forest, to view the primates. The activity begins at 8.00am and takes half the day as you look for chimpanzees plus other primates such as Grey cheeked Mangabeys, Phoestes, Red-Colobus and the Blue tailed monkeys along with the Red-tailed swinging through this dense forest together with birds, small insects and butterflies. The safari guide will offer you a comprehensive explanation on the primates, as well as the other forest plant and animal life ensuring that this walk is not only enjoyable but informative as well. After lunch, you will explore the unique Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site where you will encounter uncommon plant and animal species. This walk is superb for seeing various bird species such as the Great blue Turacco, little Bulbul, Rwenzori Turaco and the Narina Trogon, among others.

Day 4: Nature Walk, Return to Kampala

Visa Information

Ugandan visas are issued at our Missions/Embassies abroad and also at the Entry/Exit Points e.g. Entebbe, Busia, Malaba etc..

Underlying the Uganda Visa Policy is the principle of reciprocity, that is all countries that require visas for Ugandans are also visa prone in Uganda.

Visa Check List
In order to qualify for a visa application, all intending travelers to Uganda must:
* Have a valid passport issued by your government.
* The passport must be valid past the date of your expected departure from Uganda.

You must have:

  • An International Vaccination Certificate against Cholera (recommended, not required). An International Inoculation Certificate against Yellow Fever.
    • You must obtain a Uganda Government VISA before entry into Uganda.
      • To obtain a Uganda Government VISA the following are required:
        • Fill out both sides of Visa Application Form "J".
          • Submit your passport and two (2) passport-size photographs
